Woman with 27 contact lenses in her eye probably set some kind of record, right?
As a person with nearly perfect vision (not trying to brag, I swear), the thought of a morning routine that includes touching your eyeballs sounds pretty horrifying.
One woman seems to have the routine nailed down to a tee… she just happened to forget the second, and most important part: removing the contacts.
Surgeons in the UK found a staggering 17 contact lenses in a 67-year-old patient’s eye. A subsequent examination found a further 10 lenses, bringing the total number of contacts up to a staggering 27.
Rupal Morjaria, a specialist trainee ophthalmologist who found the mass of contacts, told Optometry Today: “It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.”
The patient was scheduled for cataract surgery, but the operation was postponed following the discovery.
The woman had been wearing monthly disposable contact lenses for the past 35 years but had not visited an optometrist for regular check-ups. She simply attributed the discomfort to dryness and old age.
It might be best that the patient stick to good, old-fashioned spectacles…
