From the start, the 2017 Social Good Summit focused on its mission to make the world more inclusive. With an original spoken word poem performed by inaugural U.S. Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman, the Summit served as a ‘Gathering Place’ for the exchange of ideas.
Throughout the day, the Summit reinforced the notion that we are all responsible for working towards the Sustainable Development Goals (or Global Goals). With a new “goalkeeper” of their own, the United Nations Development Programme officially announced the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir as their newest Goodwill Ambassador.
80+ speakers from around the world were at this year’s Summit, and thanks to UNICEF USA’s Portal, the social good community was able to hear directly from South Sudan’s Anne Kaku and Nelson Mandela, who are currently staying in Bidi Bidi, the world’s largest refugee settlement.
The Summit was nothing short of star-studded with speakers including Whoopi Goldberg, Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Aasif Mandvi; but these stars put their acting to the side and focused on activism, speaking out on issues ranging from the AIDS epidemic to climate change.
