Take the guesswork out of gifts

Take the guesswork out of gifts

We all have that one friend or family member who’s just impossible to shop for. Maybe their style is incredibly specific or they don’t have any real hobbies or interests to pull from. Sometimes you just don’t know their size and it would be weird to ask. As frustrating as it can be, you still want to be able to show that you appreciate them with a thoughtful gift.

That’s where Target’s new gifting program comes in. GiftNow allows you to send a gift that someone will actually love because they’ll get to personalize it. Or if they really don’t want what you picked out, they can exchange it for anything else at Target. It’s like giving a gift card or cash without looking like you just ran out of ideas.

Here’s how it works: You pick out a gift you think your friend will like at Target.com. If the product is eligible for the program, it will have a GiftNow button on the page. Once you pay for the gift, Target will send an email to the recipient saying they received a gift. If there are different options — for example, if it’s clothes and they need to pick a size or an appliance that comes in several colors —  they’ll get to pick out their choices.

If the gift is really not their style, your recipient can exchange it for a Target gift card before it even ships. That way they can get what they really want, but it’s more personal than just sending them a gift card. At least you tried! You’re not even notified if they exchange it, just that the gift was claimed.

You can even set the gift email to be delivered on a specific day, up to 12 months in advance. If the price on the item has dropped since you ordered it, they’ll get a gift card for the remaining balance. In the case of a price increase, though, they’ll still get the item you picked out without having to pay extra. Of course, if they’d rather exchange it, they get a gift card in the amount you paid, not the updated price of the item.

GiftNow takes a lot of the stress out of gift giving — not only are you spared from worrying about sizing, you don’t have to factor in shipping times when buying last minute gifts. We’re not being dramatic when we say this has the potential to totally revolutionize your gift giving.

Not every listing on Target’s website is eligible for GiftNow. You may need to do some digging to find something that you want to gift. Clothes, jewelry and appliances are usually safe bets.

Target has partnered with e-gifting company Loop Commerce on this initiative. Loop powers similar services for other big retailers like Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue.
