‘Street Fighter II’ works really well in augmented reality

When we last saw Abhishek Singh, he was playing an augmented reality version of Super Mario Bros. World 1-1 in New York’s Central Park while, somehow, completely indifferent pedestrians walked right on by.

Singh’s latest AR creation is even cooler: Street Fighter II. The (frequently re-released) arcade classic feels like a perfect fit for this kind of treatment. Character animations seem a little slow and float-y, and it’s not clear if everyone pictured in the video has their full repertoire of moves. 

Both players also appear to be using touchscreen controls which… yeah, not a great way to game.

None of that matters, though. As a proof-of-concept look, this video is dead on. Street Fighter II works marvelously well in AR. We’d love to see this blown out into a full game (preferably one that lets you use traditional controllers).
