Protester mocks Melania Trump’s ‘I Really Don’t Care’ jacket at court appearance

The woman who climbed the Statue of Liberty has a statement for Melania Trump: she really cares.

Patricia Okoumou scaled Lady Liberty a month ago to protest Donald Trump’s immigration policy of family separation. During the three-hour standoff with police officers, she said she wouldn’t come down until “all the children are released.”  Okoumou’s statement was in reference to the Trump administration detaining and separating immigrant children from their families attempting to enter the country.

For her court appearance on Friday, Okoumou wore a green dress painted with the words “I really care, why won’t u?” The dress is a play on the cargo jacket that Melania Trump was dragged for wearing to a visit to a facility for detained families.

“Be Best” was also scrawled on the back and chest of Okoumou’s dress, making fun of Melania’s half baked anti-bullying campaign

Okoumou arrived at the Statue of Liberty with Rise and Resist, an organization formed in 2016 in response to Trump’s election. At the base of the statue, the group held up a banner that said “Abolish ICE!” When police started arrested protestors, Okoumou stared to scale the 89-foot stone pedestal.

Jay Walker, a board member of Rise and Resist, told CNN that the organization staged the demonstration to protest the unconstitutional treatment of migrants at the border.

“We thought we wanted to do something on our Independence Day, a day that obviously is meant for reflection on the ideals on which this nation was founded,” Walker said. “This country has posited itself as a beacon. Right now, we have a government that is actively turning its back on those ideals.”

Okoumou was arrested and taken into federal custody after a three hour standoff.

In a statement she released after her arrest Okoumou asked supporters not to contribute to unauthorized crowdfunding accounts, but instead show their support by “calling for all detained migrant children to be immediately released and reunited with their families.”

She pleaded not guilty to charges of trespassing, disorderly conduct, and interfering with agency functions. If convicted, she could face 1.5 years in prison.

“I did not expect for it to turn out the way it did,” Okoumou said. “I just wanted to do what it is right.”

“America, you motherfuckers, you drug addicts, you KKK, you fascist USA,” she chanted after the hearing.
