Ngee Ann Polytechnic to issue blockchain diplomas in first for Singapore

In a positive development for Singapore’s Smart Nation ambitions, Ngee Ann Polytechnic is set to be the first educational institution in the city-state to use blockchain technology for awarding academic certificates to students.

To rollout the program, the school is partnering with digital certification startup Attores, an alumnus of the FinLab accelerator run by United Overseas Bank and SGInnovate.

In addition to offering security, blockchain distribution of academic certificates is expected to speed up recruitment for jobseekers and admission processes for students. The technology enables potential employers and universities to spend less time manually verifying a candidate’s academic credentials.

“We issue over 4,000 diploma certs and other kinds of certificates every year,” said Clarence Ti, principal of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, in a statement. “The process of verifying the authenticity of certificates can be very manual. With blockchain, we can simplify this process, make it user-driven, and boost productivity. Not only will this help students effectively kickstart their career, employers also get them onboard with minimal hassle.”

Blockchain certificates also present the possibility for further efficiencies; issued certificates can be immediately uploaded to a graduate’s LinkedIn profile and verified through the social network, for example.

The system being piloted by Attores and Ngee Ann will be placed on the Ethereum Blockchain, and is powered by client software built by Parity Technologies.
