Here’s what Merriam-Webster thinks of Trump’s racist ‘shithole’ comment

The people behind the Merriam-Webster dictionary have long made known their distaste for the Donald Trump. Friday’s Word of the Day is no exception.

On Thursday, the Washington Post reported that during an Oval Office meeting to discuss an immigration deal, Trump asked lawmakers, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump was speaking in reference to people from El Salvador, Haiti, and countries in Africa.

In the hours after the story broke, Trump’s “shithole” comment drew condemnation from news media, particularly from CNN’s Don Lemon who opened his Thursday night show with: “The President of the United States in racist.”

Which leads us to Friday morning, when Merriam-Webster made its opinion known by declaring “reprehensible” the word of the day. Its definition: “worthy of or deserving reprehension, blame, or censure.”

Tell us how you really feel, Merriam-Webster.
