Capcom is rereleasing ‘Street Fighter II’ (but it may literally set your SNES on fire)

Street Fighter II is getting a re-release. No, not on PC or on modern consoles — Capcom is re-releasing Street Fighter II for the SNES.

Buuuuuttt… just keep a fire extinguisher nearby if you want to play it, because the game could literally set your SNES on fire.

Capcom teamed up with iam8bit and manufacturer Retrotainment Games to produce a special edition re-release of 1991’s Street Fighter II for the SNES as a part of the series’ 30th anniversary. Also, included in the rerelease is a pretty clear warning that your SNES could catch on fire (like, actual flames) if you try to play it.

This is exactly what you shouldn’t do.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the listing, there’s a paragraph that warns of the game’s flame-inducing features:

WARNING: Use of this reproduction game cartridge (the “Product”) on the SNES gaming hardware may cause the SNES console to overheat or catch fire. The SNES hardware is deemed a vintage collectible, so please exercise extreme caution when using the Product and make sure there is fire extinguishment equipment nearby. Use of the Product is at the sole risk of the user.

If the risk of starting a fire with the game is as serious as it sounds, perhaps they should have put the warning a little higher up on the page especially considering they explicitly say it’s playable.

The re-release of Street Fighter II costs $100, which gets you one of 5,500 copies of the game, 1,000 of which have a green, glow-in-the-dark cartridge. Each copy comes with a recreation of the Street Fighter II box with colorful fold-out artwork, an instruction manual, and other retro surprises.

Orders are expected to ship in late November, which gives buyers more than enough time to buy a fire extinguisher if they don’t already have one.
