All the wild looks from the 2017 Met Gala red carpet
The Met Gala is here again for designers and famous faces to try to pull off their most high-fashion looks— and for the general public to turn them into memes.
The soiree kicks off this year’s Costume Institute exhibit, “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” celebrating the avant garde Japanese designer.
The theme gives attendees plenty to work with — Kawakubo life’s work has completely reimagined the shape of the human form, dissolved gender lines, and upended traditional funeral and wedding garb. The gravest sin celebrities can (and will) make is simply wearing something pretty, flattering, and entirely unimaginative. The notoriously private designer is making her Met Gala debut tonight.
As always, Vogue‘s Anna Wintour hosts with a rotating cast of famous fashion lovers. This year, it’s Katy Perry, Pharrell WIlliams, Tom Brady, and Gisele Bündchen. The evening’s honorary chairwomen are Kawakubo and Caroline Kennedy, the former United States ambassador to Japan.
