3 other-worldly places in Jakarta you have to see (In partnership with Uber & Canon)
One of the word’s fastest-growing metropolises, Jakarta is changing at a dizzying and exciting pace. On the other side of the coin, rapid development also means that many locales that reflect the city’s diversity and rich cultural identity are being taken for granted.
Uber and Canon have decided to bring these unsung destinations to the forefront. Under their commission, three Jakarta-based influencers specializing in street photography embarked on a journey to photograph the most under-the-radar locations in the city. The list was pulled together using Uber’s internal data, based on which sites had the lowest number of drop-off requests. These places are called “hidden gems” for a reason: Not even the influencers — widely considered insiders of their own city — have set foot in them. Canon’s EOS M mirrorless camera range was used to capture their experience of getting acquainted with these places from a photographer’s point of view. These snapshots are shared on Uber and Canon’s Instagram feeds under the hashtags #CanonxUber, #whereto and #hiddencities, imploring followers to seek similar moments of discovery and unlock hidden corners of their own cities.
“Across Southeast Asia, there’s so much history that has been forgotten in the rush of modernization: There are many places to discover, even if you’ve lived somewhere your whole life,” says an Uber brand representative. “Broadening your horizons and visiting new places — even within a city you thought you knew — can inspire you to rethink and appreciate it in a new light.” Keep reading to unlock three of Jakarta’s best kept secrets.
